Cats Lose Heartbreaker

The Border Cats erupted for five runs in the top of the 7th inning Sunday in Waterloo to grab a 9-4 lead, but the Bucks battled back, putting up five of their own in the bottom of the 9th, and one run in the 10th to upend Thunder Bay 10-9 in extra innings. Jake Mahon's bases-loaded single to right field with one-out drove home the winning run for the North Division leading Bucks. Waterloo had loaded the bases on a walk, a base hit and an error. Bradley Horn (Murray State College) took the loss in relief to fall to 0-1. Matt Blackham (Johnson County College) came out of the bullpen and struck out four batters in 3 2/3 innings, but couldn't slam the door as the Bucks scored five times to knot the game 9-9 after nine innings. Caleb Smith (Rice University) started for Thunder Bay and went 4 1/3 innings. The righthander allowed three hits and four runs (two earned), with four walks and two strikeouts.

Nicholls State University teammates Tyler Duplantis and Philip Lyons led the Cats offensively as they both went 2-5 with two runs batted in and a run scored each. Dylan Becker (Missouri State Universtiy) had two doubles in five at-bats and scored twice. Jacob Rogers (Eastern New Mexico University) also had a 2-5 day at the plate with a double, one RBI, and one run scored. The Cats outhit the Bucks 12-11, but saw their first half record drop to 10-16.

The Cats continue their four-game road trip Monday night in Mankato against the MoonDogs at 8:05pm ET. Clint Knoblauch (Florida Gulf Coast University) will get the start on the mound for Thunder Bay.
