Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers bats waited patiently through two delays to explode in a 12-3 win in four and a half innings over the Duluth Huskies on Saturday June 22 at Mayo Field.
After a rain delay of over 90 minutes, Duluth jumped ahead to an early lead in the top half of the first inning with a pair of unearned runs off of Rochester starting pitcher Brandon Stennis (Doane College.) Stennis allowed the two unearned runs on five hits in two innings.
Alex Greer (Iowa Western) led off the bottom half of the second inning by reaching on an error by Huskies shortstop Kyle Teaf. The game was then delayed for another 15 minutes due to the lightning beyond the center field fence. Jared Deacon (Cal State Fullerton) drew a walk and Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) and Kevin Barker (UC Davis) each picked up a RBI to tie the score at 2-2. With the bases loaded and no outs, Jarad Watts (Bethel University) delivered a two-run double down the right field line to give Rochester a 4-2 lead. Greer capped off the eight-run inning with a two-run homerun, his team-leading fifth of the season, to put the Honkers ahead 8-2.
Duluth loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the third inning, but Mason Pingel (Western Illinois) got Alex Wojciechowski to ground into a double play; and the Huskies scored just one unearned run in the inning. Pingel allowed two hits in three innings of relief to earn his second win (2-2) of the season. Phillip Wilson was the losing pitcher for Duluth, as he allowed six runs on three hits in one-plus innings of work.
Tucker Tharp (Kansas) added a two-run homerun, his second of the season, in the bottom of the third inning as a part of a three-run inning and the Honkers led 11-2. Rochester loaded the bases and scored another run in its half of the fifth inning, but the lightning ended the rally and the game; as the game was ruled official after four and a half innings. Tharp finished the game with three RBI.
Watts led the Honkers offense by going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI. Michael Pomeroy (Grand Canyon University) and Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) each picked up a pair of hits on the night. With the hits, Burgess has now hit safely in all 12 games with the Honkers this season.
The two teams will finish a two-game series on Sunday June 23 at 1:05 p.m. at Mayo Field. Derrick Hadley (Sam Houston State) is slated to make the start for Rochester (15-9,) while Luke Vandermaten (Iowa Central Community College) is scheduled to start for Duluth (12-13.) The Honkers will look to extend their eight-game winning streak before heading out on an eight-game road trip over seven days beginning on Tuesday, June 25. The Honkers will be in St. Cloud, Alexandria, and Willmar on the road trip.
