Cats increase division lead up to six games

Troy, NY- The Tri-City ValleyCats beat the Oneonta Tigers 10-2 due to four run fourth inning. The ValleyCats received very good hitting performances from Lou Santangelo, who went 3-4 with a single, double, home run and three RBI's; and Chris Clark, who went 2-4 with two RBI's. Tri-City now has a six game lead over Oneonta in the Stedler Division of the New York-Penn. League.

Rodrigo Escobar picked up the win after getting the start in place of Evan Englebrook. Escobar tossed five innings of one-run ball, allowing just three hits while walking none and striking out four.

The ValleyCats started the scoring very early on. In the first inning, Hunter Pence reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base. Ben Zobrist then flew out and Mario Garza walked. Chris Clark responded with an RBI single to centerfield, as Hunter Pence scored. Matt Williams picked up the ball and fired a perfect one-hop throw to catch Garza at third base.

In the second inning, Luke Barganier hit a ball that skipped over the body of Tigers second baseman Francisco Castro. He ranged to his left to field the sharply hit ground ball. At the last second, the ball took a tough hop and went into short right centerfield. Lou Santangelo then belted a double to right that brought Barganier home. Then Edgar Babilonia knocked a base hit to give Tri-City a 3-0 lead.

In the Tigers fifth inning, Robert Tulk belted a solo home run off of Escobar. The ball carried over the right field wall. The Tigers added another run in the seventh when Brent Dlugach smacked a ball that sailed over the left-field wall against ValleyCats hurler Casey Brown.

In the fourth inning, the 'Cats pushed four runs across in a marathon ten batter inning. Chris Clark started it with a home run. Francisco Caraballo walked and advanced to second base when Josh Kauten unleashed a wild pitch. Luke Barganier's ground out allowed Francisco to move up to third base.

Lou Santangelo knocked Caraballo home for his second RBI of the game. His single knocked Kauten out of the game. Matt Righter came in and did not fare much better.

Drew Sutton's single pushed him up to third base. Hunter Pence's RBI single brought Santangelo home. Pence scored when Ben Zobrist hit a double. The ValleyCats had a 6-0 lead before Tulk's home run took the shutout away from Escobar in the fifth inning.

The two teams combined for three home runs in the eighth inning. Brent Dlugach hit one off of Brown and in the bottom of the frame, the Cats went to work against Colin Mahoney. Francisco Caraballo and Lou Santangelo tagged solo home runs to left centerfield with the wind blowing out at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. Each of the five home runs hit between both teams went over the wall in left center.
