Cards hold off 'Gades in extra innings

Fishkill, NY- In a twelve-inning marathon, the New Jersey Cardinals defeated the Hudson Valley Renegades 3-2 at Dutchess Stadium in front of a crowd of 4,399. The loss leaves the Renegades one game behind the first place Brooklyn Cyclones and 2 ½ games in front of New Jersey for the wild card.

The Cardinals scored first in the second inning on SS Matt Shepherd's RBI ground out. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when the Renegades scored two runs of their own. RBI singles from RF Shaun Cumberland and C Matt Spring gave the Renegades the lead.

In the top of the seventh, the Cardinals tied it up on a solo home run from LF Wes Swackhamer ending the scoring in regulation.

The Renegades had a chance to win the game in the ninth with the bases loaded and one out but were unable to get the run in.

In the twelfth, the Cardinals were able to score what would be the winning run on 2B Chris Patrick's, the New York-Penn Leagues leading hitter, RBI single.

In the bottom of the twelfth, 2B Josh Asanovich singled with one out and advanced to second, but was not able to come around and score the tying run.

Tim King (ND) started the game for the Renegades and pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing three hits and one run. Ryan Bitter pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief retiring all seven batters he faced. Andrew Weimer (L, 0-1) got the loss pitching the twelfth, allowing two hits and one run.

Chris Bova started for the Cardinals. He pitched six innings, allowing two runs and five hits. Austin Tubb (W, 2-1) earned the win pitching the eleventh and twelfth innings, allowing two hits and no runs.

The Renegades and Cardinals head to New Jersey tomorrow to play the rubber game of the three game series. Scheduled to pitch for the Renegades is Jarrad Lavergne (1-1, 2.30) and C. DellaRocca (0-0, 4.15) for the Cardinals. Game time is 7 PM.
