Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
Burlington, VT- Carlos De La Cruz went 4-for-4 with a double, triple and an RBI as the Lowell Spinners snapped a 1-1 tie with four runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat the Vermont Expos 5-3 in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at Centennial Field.
The first five batters of the seventh inning reached safely for the Spinners on a walk and four straight singles. Chris Turner and Patrick Perry both had RBI singles, while Matt Van Der Bosch an RBI forceout and John Otness a sacrifice fly. All four runs came off Expos reliever Francisco Sandoval (4-2), who took the loss for Vermont.
Lowell had taken a 1-0 lead on an RBI triple from De La Cruz in the fifth inning, but the Expos tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run from Lorvin Louisa. Vermont's other two runs came in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run homer from Brad Ditter.
Four Spinner pitchers combined to allow just four hits to the Expos, which included Louisa's first and Ditter's second home runs of the season. It was the eighth time this season that Vermont has had two or more home runs in a game and also gave the Expos 35 home runs on the season, tying the 35 hit in 1995 for second all-time (45 in 1999).
But when Louisa and Ditter weren't hitting home runs, the Expos were striking out. Spinner pitchers struckout 17 Vermont batters on the night, tying the Expos record for strikeouts in a game (also 17 whiffs vs. Brooklyn July 28, 2001).
Starter Andrew Dobies retired all six batters he faced with three strikeouts in two innings, while reliver Ryan Schroyer (3-1) struckout nine in four innings to pick up the win. Scott Shoemaker struckout two of the three batters he faced in the ninth inning for his third save.
Starter Nehomar Ochoa allowed two hits over the first four innings for Vermont (23-27). Sandoval had allowed a run on two hits with four strikeouts in his first two innings of work before charged with the four runs in the seventh.
Chuck Jeroloman was 2-for-3 with two runs and Turner went 2-for-4 for Lowell (22-31), which evened the three-game series at one game each.
The final game of the three-game series will be Thursday night at Centennial Field with Jim Henderson on the mound for Vermont and plenty of hot dogs in the concession stand as the Expos hold their annual "Hot Dog Heaven" with 25-cent hot dogs all night long.
