'Cats Even Series Behind 3-Run Second and McKenzie's 6 Strong Innings

GARY, Ind. - A three-run second, six innings of two-run ball from Jeff McKenzie and three scoreless innings of relief from the Gary bullpen led the RailCats to a 5-2 win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes with 3,318 in attendance on Tuesday night at U.S. Steel Yard. Gary never trailed on the night and remain in a first-place tie in the North Division with St. Paul after the Saints defeated the Sioux Falls Canaries on the night.

Gary (45-35) took the opening lead for the second consecutive night with a three-run second inning. Colin Willis recorded the RailCats first hit and extended his career-and-season-high on-base streak to 31 games with a single to center to begin the frame. Tillman Pugh followed Willis with a six-pitch walk to increase his on-base streak to 27, giving the 'Cats runners on first and second. Andy Paz then followed with an RBI double down the first base line, however, Goldeyes shortstop Josh Mazzola muffed the relay throw into second base, allowing Pugh to score from first. Paz's RBI double also increased his season-high hitting streak to 16 games. D.K. Carey then made it 3-0 with an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Paz for the final run of the inning.

Winnipeg (36-46) trimmed the Gary lead to 3-2 with their only runs in the third. Josh Romanski recorded the second of his three hits with a two-out single to center before Reggie Abercrombie clobbered a two-run home run off the RailCats video board in left-center.

The RailCats went back in front by three with two more runs in the sixth. Will Savage led off the frame with a single to left before Randy Santiesteban belted a two-run home run off the net beyond the left field wall.

McKenzie (5-9) went at least six innings for the fourth consecutive time and ended his three-game losing streak after yielding eight hits, a walk and three strikeouts in his 16th start of the year. Michigan City, Ind., native Robbie Coursel (1) recorded a hold with a scoreless top of the seventh in his Independent Professional baseball debut. Coursel's Gary debut was also his first appearance in nearly two years.

Myles Smith (6) recorded his second straight hold with a scoreless top of eighth and Adam Quintana (7) earned his second straight save with a perfect bottom of the ninth. Alex Boshers (3-9) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits, a walk and three strikeouts over six innings.

Gary and Winnipeg play one another for the final time during the regular season on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m. RailCats RHP Gabe Perez (4-1, 3.32) makes his 10th start against Goldeyes LHP Kevin McGovern (4-9, 4.51) in the series finale.
