Cats Continue Winning Ways

The Moncton Wildcats used four powerplay goals to defeat the Baie Comeau Drakkar 6-3 Saturday night at the Moncton Coliseum, extending their winning streak to five games. Alex MacDonald scored his first two goals of the season and Allain Saulnier continued his hot hand scoring a goal and adding two assists to lead the Cats. Moncton also got goals from Brandon Gormley making his season debut, Simon Jodoin and Devon MacAusland. Marc-Olivier Mimar, Kevin Fiset and Alexandre Durette replied for the Drakkar. Shane Owen recorded the win for the Wildcats stopping 31 of the 34 shots he faced. Jason Missiaen stopped 29 of 35 in the losing effort for the Drakkar.

The Wildcats came out strong to start the game and were able to capitalize on their powerplay opportunities to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. MacDonald opened the scoring on the powerplay at 2:45, Saulnier scored on the powerplay at 7:53 and Gormley added a powerplay marker of his own at 10:50. Shots in the first period were 13-11 in favor of the Cats.

Alex MacDonald scored his second of the game 5:52 into the second to give Moncton a 4-0 lead. Mimar gave the Drakkar some life on the powerplay at 9:25. The teams each had 11 shots apiece in the period as the Cats took a 4-1 lead into the final frame.

The Drakkar continued to carry the momentum in the third period and got within two goals at 6:58 when Fiset made it 4-2. Durette got the Drakkar within one at 11:31 but that was as close as the Drakkar would get. Jodoin gave the Wildcats the insurance goal they were looking for at 15:49 and MacAusland scored an empty net powerplay goal with 12 seconds to seal the victory for the Cats.

The Wildcats had a 35-34 shot advantage in the game and went 4 for 10 on the powerplay, while the Drakkar struggled on the man advantage scoring on only one of their nine powerplay opportunities.

The Cats are back in action tomorrow October 3rd as the welcome Patrick Roy and the high flying Quebec Remparts to the Coliseum game time is 4pm. Former Wildcat coach Ted Nolan will be on hand for the ceremonial puck drop.
