Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release
Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - Etienne Brodeur has turned a lot of heads in the early part of the season, lighting the lamp six times in nine games. On Sunday afternoon, the 19-year old added to that total, scoring twice, including the game winner in overtime, as the Lewiston MAINEiacs picked up a 5-4 win over the Val-d'Or Foreurs at the Centre Air Creebec. With the win, the MAINEiacs secured five out of eight possible points on their four-game road trip.
For the second straight game, the Foreurs got off to a strong start, thanks to a pair of power play goals. Marc-Alain Begin and Jonathan Hazen scored 53 seconds apart to give the home team a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. Val-d'Or wasn't messing around on the man advantage, as the two Lewiston penalties lasted for a combined total of 28 seconds.
Early in the second period, the MAINEiacs got a goal back, when Etienne Brodeur scored an unassisted tally at the 1:44 mark. The middle frame was significantly quieter than the first, as the Foreurs picked up the only two penalties, after 17 were whistled in the opening stanza.
In the third period, Lewiston was given a golden opportunity to work with, as Val-d'Or's Guillaume Gelinas was given a major penalty for charging. Samuel Henley immediately came to the defense of teammate Pierre-Olivier Morin, but received a minor for instigating. Morin was shaken up briefly, but did return to play the remainder of the contest.
While skating four-on-four, the MAINEiacs got the equalizer, as Michael Chaput netted his first goal of the season from Stefan Fournier at the 4:45 mark. Then, after Henley's penalty expired, Lewiston capitalized with two power play goals. The first came from Sam Carrier at 7:28, and 40 seconds later, Jess Tanguy scored an unassisted goal, putting the visitors ahead by a pair. Tanguy and Chaput assisted on Carrier's go-ahead marker.
A little more than two minutes later, the Foreurs drew within a goal, when Shawn Morton-Boutin found the back of the net. Then, with 53 seconds remaining, Jonathan Hazen capitalized on a Lewiston turnover, tying the game at four, and forcing overtime.
In overtime, the MAINEiacs looked to their leading goal scorer, as Etienne Brodeur curled, dragged, and beat Jacob Gervais-Chouinard for his eighth goal of the season, lifting Lewiston to a 5-4 victory.
Nicholas Champion got the win for Lewiston, making 32 saves on 36 shots. Francois Tremblay started for Val-d'Or, and allowed four goals on 19 shots in 48:06, before being replaced by Jacob Gervais-Chouinard, who allowed one goal on three shots, including the game winner.
After earning five out of eight possible points on the road, the MAINEiacs will now return home to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee for a three-game homestand. "Pink in the Rink" gets the homestand started on Friday night at 7:00, as Lewiston plays the first of two games against the Victoriaville Tigres.
