Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SYDNEY, NS --- On the strength of a 29-save performance by veteran goaltender François Lacerte, the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles scored a dramatic upset win over the Saint John Sea Dogs on Sunday afternoon, defeating the reigning Maritime Division champs 2-1 at Centre 200.
Viktor Hertzberg and Logan Shaw both scored goals for Cape Breton in Sunday's come-from-behind home win, with Zack Phillips netting the lone marker of the match for Saint John. Frédéric Piché was solid in net for the Sea Dogs in a losing effort, turning aside 23 of the 25 shots sent his way by Screaming Eagles skaters on the day.
After a scoreless opening forty minutes of play (which saw Washington Capitals prospect Stanislav Galiev both hitting a post and having a goal disallowed due to a perceived 'distinct kicking motion') were staged on Sunday, second-year sniper Zack Phillips finally broke the longstanding 0-0 deadlock by deflecting a Gabriel Bourret point shot past Lacerte to tally his fifth marker of the season. Import winger Tomas Jurco also picked up an assist on Phillips' power play goal, which came at the 1:19 mark of the third period.
Cape Breton tied things up at one apiece 13:24 later when Logan Shaw hammered a one-timer to the back of Saint John's net from the lower slot to improve his 2010-11 goals total to four. With only nine seconds remaining in regulation, a crease-hovering Viktor Hertzberg completed the Screaming Eagles' comeback by shovelling a loose puck past Piché at the end of a turnover-induced down-ice rush.
Up next for the 5-2-0-1 Sea Dogs is a Friday night showdown with the Moncton Wildcats at Harbour Station (puck drop - 7:30pm). Tickets to this much-anticipated battle between last year's President's Cup Finalists can be obtained by calling the arena box office at (506) 657-1234, or by visiting www.tickets.harbourstation.ca .
