Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

An Alex Buchholz RBI groundout in the fifth proved the difference, as the Hillcats held on to sweep Salem, 4-3. The win marks the Cats' first sweep of the season, fifth straight win and third straight series victory.

Salem scored first in the first inning. Mitch Dening tripled with one out and later scored on Tim Federowicz's single. But the first could have been much worse, as the Sox loaded the bases with one out before starter Jordan Hotchkiss retired Alex Hassan and Drew Hedman to end the inning.

The Cats came right back with two runs in the bottom of the first. Jose Gualdron hit a one-out double and scored with two outs on Carlos Mendez's double. Mendez advanced to third during Neftali Soto's at-bat on a wild pitch. Soto was walked, before Kevin Coddington drove in Mendez.

Lynchburg tacked on one more in the fourth. Coddington led off with a double and later scored on Kevyn Feiner's single. All three runs scored at that point were scored with two outs.

After starter Jordan Hotchkiss left the game, Salem got even. In the top of the fifth, the first two hitters reached and scored. Jon Hee was walked and scored on the double by Peter Hissey. Tim Federowicz drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at three.

But the Cats came back for one more to retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Efrain Contreras pinch hit for Josh Fellhauer and singled to lead off the inning. Jose Gualdron followed with a bunt single, and the runners moved to second and third on Salem starter Brock Huntzinger's throwing error. Alex Buchholz then grounded out, scoring Contreras.

Andrew Bowman gets credit for the win. In two innings of relief, he let up two earned runs and struck out one. Jeff Jeffords and Justin Freeman pitched the final third of the game scoreless. Freeman threw a scoreless ninth for his fifth save of the season.

Lynchburg heads on the road for seven more games against Frederick and Salem. The Hillcats and the Keys open up a four-game weekend set tomorrow night at 7 p.m. Curtis Partch (2-4, 3.73) starts for the Hillcats against Frederick's Ryan Berry (1-0, 0.00).
