Potomac Nationals News Release

The Potomac Nationals didn't exactly sprint through the finish line in their ninth home game in 10 days.

It took more than three hours, but Potomac finally took down Winston-Salem 12-4 Wednesday night at Pfitzner Stadium, taking the three-game series 2-1 from the Dash. With the win, the P-Nats improve to 24-29, tied for second place in the Carolina League Northern Division. The loss drops Winston-Salem to 34-19, which is still the best record in the CL.

Potomac belted out a season-high18 hits and benefited from three Dash errors in the win. In a wild game that featured a rare bunt-double by Dan Lyons, every P-Nats hitter recorded at least one hit, only Bill Rhinehart failed to score a run and only Robby Jacobsen and Nick Moresi failed to drive in a run.

The home team wasted no time, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after six hits in the first inning. Steve Lombardozzi hit a leadoff double, then immediately scored on Lyons' bunt double. Derek Norris singled to put runners on the corners with nobody out for Mike Burgess, who sent them both home with the third double of the inning. Rhinehart later plated Burgess to put Potomac up 4-0.

The Dash posted two runs in the second and third innings to tie the game, but things just went downhill for Winston-Salem from there.

Potomac exploded for four runs in the third inning. With the bases full of Moresi, Jacobsen and Tyler Moore, Chris Curran singled to score Moore. Lombardozzi walked in a run, then Derek Norris drove in Moresi and Curran with a single to left.

With that, Dash starter Nate Jones was done. He allowed eight runs, five earned, on 11 hits in just 2 2/3 innings.

Potomac Starter Brad Peacock held the Dash to three earned runs on nine hits, but did not get credit for the win, leaving the game after 4 2/3 innings. Clayton Dill was strong in relief, getting the win after holding Winston-Salem scoreless in 2 1/3 innings.

Six P-Nats fans finished with multiple hits. Lombardozzi (2-3), Lyons (2-5), Norris (2-5), Rhinehart (3-5) and Curran (3-4) combined for seven RBI and seven runs. Lombardozzi, Lyons, Burgess, Moresi and Rhinehart each recorded a double in the game.

Potomac added two runs in the fourth. Moore led off with a towering solo shot over the center-field wall. With the bases loaded, Lyons walked in Moresi to extend the lead to 10-4.

The P-Nats posted another run in the sixth as Moresi hit a leadoff single, took third on a fielding error by Brandon Short, and scored on a wild pitch by Charlis Burdie.

Potomac finally made it 12-4 in the seventh. Moore walked to lead off the inning, took second as Jacobsen walked and moved to third as Moresi was hit by a pitch. Chris Curran hit a sac fly to plate Moore.

The P-Nats head to Wilmington tomorrow for a showdown with the Blue Rocks at 7:05 p.m.
