Charleston, WV (May 6, 2013) - The South Atlantic League office has announced its' Player and Pitcher of the Week for the time period of April 29 through May 5. West Virginia Power pitcher Orlando Castro was selected as the Pitcher-of-the-Week for that time period. The left-hander, a native of San Pedro Sulas, Honduras, went 1-0 during the week, tossing six innings of shutout ball on Friday while striking out seven and walking none in a 3-0 win over Greensboro.
Castro was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2009 and made his professional debut in 2010 in the Venezuelan Summer League. The southpaw appeared in seven games at the end of the 2011 season for the Power and made 18 relief appearances for West Virginia during the 2012 season.
The Pirates transitioned Castro to become a starting pitcher this season and he has flourished. He has started six games for West Virginia, going 3-2 with a 1.36 earned run average, 29 strikeouts, and has only walked one batter in 33 innings pitched. Entering play on May 6, Castro's ERA is the fifth lowest among all qualifiers in the league.
Asheville's Tom Murphy was recognized by the league at the Player-of-the-Week for this same time span.
