Biloxi Shuckers News Release
BILOXI, MS - For a second consecutive game, the Biloxi Shuckers (16-38) fought back from an early deficit to tie the game but ultimately fell 5-2 to the Birmingham Barons (29-25) on Tuesday night at MGM Park.
Birmingham took the lead two batters into the ball game as Laz Rivera doubled to shallow center and Romy Gonzalez followed with an opposite field home run, his 11th of the season, to put the Barons ahead 2-0.
The Shuckers would strike back to tie the game in the home half of the third. David Fry singled to right with one out, and after a flyout by Ryan Aguilar, Cam Devanney poked an opposite field single to right, putting two men on for Brice Turang. The Brewers' #2 prospect singled to left field, driving in Fry to bring the Shuckers within one at 2-1. Luis Castro followed with a walk and Alexander Palma singled to left, scoring Devanney to tie the game. The rally was cut short as Turang was thrown out at home trying to score on Palma's hit for the final out.
RHP Jesus Castillo (L, 0-4) gave the Shuckers seven innings of work but allowed two more runs in the top of the sixth. After Rivera singled to right, Castillo struck out Gonzalez, but Micker Adolfo doubled to right field with two outs, plating Rivera. As Adolfo went sliding into third, a throw from Castillo to try and catch him went wide of the base and into left field, allowing Adolfo to come all the way around and score, putting the Barons up 4-2.
The Shuckers would manage a base runner in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but a combination of RHP Emilio Vargas (H,1) and LHP Bennett Sousa (S,3) kept the Shuckers off the board in the final four frames.
Biloxi continues their six-game series with the Barons on Wednesday night at MGM Park. The Shuckers are scheduled to send LHP Andy Otero (2-0, 1.48) to the hill opposite Barons' RHP Jason Bilous (1-1, 3.77) for a 6:35 pm first pitch. The game can be heard locally on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9 and can be streamed on MiLB TV.
