New Jersey Jackals News Release

The New Jersey Jackals defeated the Ottawa Champions by a score of 4-1 on Saturday night. Right-hander Lendy Castillo pitched a gem for the Jackals, tossing six strong innings of four-hit ball while allowing one run (0 ER) and fanning 7 along the way

Conrad Gregor began the scoring for the Jackals with a solo HR in the top of the first 1st off of Champions' starter Jordan Kurokawa.

Kurokawa did not fare much better the rest of the game; he allowed 5 hits after Gregor's home run. One of those hits came in the second inning when Richard Stock drove in David Harris, who led off the inning with a single.

Two more came in the 3rd when Harris collected his second base knock of the game. This one was an infield single where Ottawa shortstop Nick DeTringo made a spectacular play smothering the ground ball but had no throw to make. Conrad Gregor scored on the play; Gregor was only 90 feet from home after a stolen base and a throwing error from the catcher turned Gregor's plate appearance into a three-base walk.

A wild pitch in the 4th allowed Nelson Ward to score the fourth Jackals run in the game. Ward led off the inning with a double.

Kurokawa surrendered a run in all but two of his 6 innings of work. Kurokawa struck out 3 and walked 3 Jackals.

As for Castillo, it was smooth sailing most of the game. Ottawa's first real chance to score came in the 3rd when singles from Larry Balkwill and Malik Collymore put a pair of Champions on base. Castillo ultimately left the inning unscathed as the base runners were erased with a fly outs to right and center.

The only scoring for Ottawa came from a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jiandido Tromp. Castillo was charged with an unearned run.

Reese Karalus came on to pitch a 1-2-3 7th inning for the Jackals. Dylan Brammer recorded the 6th out save, striking out Jordan Caillouet for the final out. Karalus and Brammer combined for three innings in hit-less relief for the Jackals as Brammer picked up his 7th save of the season.

Castillo improves to 4-3 on the season, while Kurokawa is on the short end; falling to 1-5. The series will conclude Sunday afternoon at 2pm as the Jackals aim to complete the 3-game sweep.
