Casetta-Stubbs Flings Five No-Hit Innings in 2-1 Win

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Damon Casetta-Stubbs tossed five hitless innings in his Power debut to guide West Virginia to a 2-1 win over the Columbia Fireflies, completing their second series sweep of the year and securing the Power's seventh straight win at home Wednesday night at Appalachian Power Park.

Casetta-Stubbs (1-0) dominated from the beginning, retiring the first thirteen batters he faced and allowing just a single baserunner on a hit by pitch before his night came to a close after five innings of work.

Columbia (7-12) starter Christian James (0-3) had a strong night as well, keeping the game scoreless heading into the fifth inning. After setting down the first two batters, James issued a walk to Ryan Ramiz. The next batter, Charlie McConnell, skied a fly ball into deep center field, where Anthony Dirocie dropped it on the warning track, letting Ramiz come in to score and give the Power (12-6) a 1-0 lead.

Joseph Rosa followed that up by ripping a ball to the wall in right, scoring McConnell and increasing the West Virginia lead to 2-0.

Devin Sweet entered in the sixth and ceded the first hit of the game to the leadoff hitter, but buckled down to retire the next six batters he faced. Bryan Pall hurled a scoreless eighth as well with two strikeouts.

Nolan Hoffman (S, 2) shut the door on the Fireflies in the ninth, despite giving up a run and loading the bases with one down in the inning. The Texas A&M product battled back to strike out Juan Uriarte and induce a weak grounder to first from Wagner Lagrange to cap the 2-1 victory and the seventh straight home win for West Virginia.

The Power has now won eight of their last nine games and boasts an impressive 8-1 record at home in 2019.

West Virginia continues their homestand with the series opener against the Asheville Tourists Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at Appalachian Power Park. LHP Steven Moyers (1-1, 6.06 ERA) heads to the bump for the Power, while the Tourists send RHP Frederis Parra (0-0, 4.05 ERA) to the slab. Thursday marks the second Thirsty Thursday at Appalachian Power Park.
