HAGERSTOWN, W.Va. - The Greenville Drive (9-10) swept Wednesday's doubleheader over the Hagerstown Suns (9-11) at Municipal Stadium. The Drive capped off the resumption of Tuesday's game with a 6-4 victory, before claiming a 4-2 win in game two in eight innings.
In the resumption from Tuesday, the Drive added to its 4-3 lead with a run in the fifth. Cole Brannen tripled to right to lead off the inning and two batters later Devlin Granberg singled to center to score him and make it a 5-3 game.
Hagerstown countered with a run in the bottom of the fifth. A two-out, RBI single by KJ Harrison scored Jacob Rhinesmith, who singled and stole second earlier in the inning, to cut the lead to 5-4.
Greenville added an insurance run in the eighth. With Jordan Wren at third with two outs, Brandon Howlett singled to center to plate Wren and pushed the score to the eventual final of 6-4.
Oddanier Mosqueda (2-0) got the win for the Drive, tossing 2.1 innings in relief of starter Angel Padron when the game resumed. Mosqueda allowed one run on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Hagerstown starter Jake Irvin (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk in 3.0 innings pitched.
The Drive bullpen recorded 4.0 scoreless innings in the win. Yoan Aybar held Hagerstown without a hit over 2.0 innings with four strikeouts. Rio Gomez then closed it out, earning his second save of the year with a scoreless eighth and ninth innings, allowing a lone hit with four strikeouts.
Triston Casas was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a run and an RBI to lead the team in game one. Cole Brannen also put together a 2-for-5 game with a run scored.
Game two proved to be a low-scoring duel. Hagerstown broke through in the third on a two-out, RBI single by Israel Pineda, taking a 1-0 lead. Greenville answered in the top of the fourth, as Kole Cottam doubled to right with two outs to bring in Wren and tie the game at 1-1.
Hagerstown reclaimed the lead with a lone run in the fifth. A Cody Wilson lead-off double was cashed in three batters later by Rhinesmith to push the Suns back in front 2-1.
Greenville then managed to tie the game in the top of the seventh. Casas singled to right to open the frame, before moving to second on a passed ball. Two batters later, Howlett again came up clutch with a double to left to Drive in Casas and even the score at 2-2. Logan Browning worked a scoreless bottom half of the inning to force extras.
The Drive doubled their run total, scratching across two runs in the eighth. With Grant Williams starting the inning at second base, Brannen led off with a bunt single and later stole second, putting runners at second and third with no outs. Two batters later, Wren singled to right to bring home Williams and make it a 3-2 game. After Cottam was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Casas drove in the fourth and final run with a sac fly to left, giving the Drive a 4-2 advantage. Browning (2-0) closed it out with a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth, earning his second win of the season.
Drive starter Chris Machamer worked 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on nine hits with three strikeouts against a lone walk. At the plate, all nine Drive hitters reached base with the eight hits divided up equally among the top eight hitters in the order.
The Drive will now head to Lexington for a four-game series, beginning on Thursday with a 7:05 first pitch.
