Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Chris Carter hit two home runs - including a first-inning grand slam - and drove in five runs as the Tucson Sidewinders downed the Portland Beavers 10-8 before 7,124 Sunday afternoon at PGE Park.

Jeff Salazar hit a solo homer in the sixth, Rich Thompson was 4-for-5 with two doubles and Alberto Callaspo, who tallied four hits Saturday night, added three more Sunday for the Sidewinders (54-48).

It was the seventh straight loss for the Beavers (41-61), matching the team's seven-year franchise records (since 2001) for consecutive losses and consecutive home defeats (7).

Mike Thompson (2-9) gave up a season-high three home runs and allowed six runs and eight hits in six innings for the loss.

Evan MacLane (7-7), making just his second appearance out of the bullpen this season, struck out five and gave up three runs and four hits in 3 2/3 innings on his way to the win. Chad Harville picked up his 25th save for Tucson.

Brian Myrow, Ray Chang and Royce Huffman drove in two runs apiece to lead the Beavers.

After falling behind early, the Beavers chipped away at their deficit, eventually getting to within a run in the seventh, but Tucson put together a four-run rally in the top of the eighth.

The offense was quick to come for the Sidewinders, with each of the first three batters reaching against Thompson in the first and the cleanup batter Carter doing his job by hitting a grand slam just over the wall in center.

Carter, who matched his season high for RBIs, added a solo homer in the third for the Sidewinders, the defending PCL champions who are 8-3 against Portland this season.

In the second, Myrow hit a first-pitch offering from Tucson starter Bill Murphy over the wall in right, his eighth homer of the year, to cut the Beavers' deficit to three runs at the time.

In the bottom of the third, Murphy hit consecutive batters, and the Beavers loaded the bases, netting one run when Peter Ciofrone came in from third when Chang was struck by a pitch.

Portland's Yordany Ramirez doubled with one out in the sixth, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch by MacLane. The Beavers trimmed their deficit to a run in the seventh, getting two-out RBI hits from Myrow and Chang.

Trailing 10-5 in the eighth, the Beavers loaded the bases, eventually getting three runs back on an RBI groundout by Ciofrone and a two-run single by Huffman, who had three hits in the game.

The Beavers wrap up their brief homestand Monday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. in a Businessperson's Special.

NOTES: A day after making two stellar grabs, Ramirez, the Portland center fielder, turned in yet another highlight-reel catch, smacking into the wall to rob Salazar of extra bases in the top of the first ... it was Carter's second two-homer game of the season ... the Beavers are averaging 7,778 fans per game in July (8 games) ... Frank Menechino struck out in a pinch-hit at-bat in the ninth, ending his hitting streak at eight games.
