Carson homers twice in 8-1 Trenton win

(Trenton, NJ)- Matt Carson hit a pair of solo homers, two of of the three on the night for Trenton, as the Thunder beat Reading, 8-2 on Sunday night. The win was the 79th of the season for the Thunder, the 3rd most in franchise history.

Carson slammed his 1st homer of the night in the 3rd Inning off Reading starter Nick Mattioni for a 1-0 lead. After Reading tied the game in the top of the fourth, 1B Randy Ruiz hit a solo homer for a 2-1 lead. Mattioni (5-5) allowed two runs in five innings to take the loss. Meanwhile, Thunder starter Matt DeSalvo got through five innings for the win. DeSalvo (5-4) allowed one run on five hits with five walks and four strikeouts. Reading (71-68) missed chances against DeSalvo early in the game, leaving nine runners on base.

Trenton (79-62) broke the game open in the 6th Inning. Off reliever Matt Sweeney, the Thunder scored three runs on a two-run double by RF Vince Faison and an RBI single by LF Justin Christian. The lead went to 7-1 with two more runs in the 7th Inning. 2B Gabe Lopez doubled home one of the runs with SS Felix Escalona adding an RBI single for the other.

Carson then capped off his three-hit night with a solo homer off reliever Chris Key in the 8th Inning for an 8-1 lead.

Trenton wraps up the regular season against Reading on Monday at 1:35 PM. Francisco Butto (2-2, 3.17) starts for the Thunder against Reading's Gio Gonzalez (7-11, 4.42).
