Zebulon, NC --- Carolina Mudcats outfielder Dave Sappelt was named the Southern League Most Valuable Player for the 2010 season the league announced yesterday.

The most prestigious award offered by the S.L. was collaboratively voted upon by league managers, broadcasters and print media. Sappelt's MVP commendation is the fourth in the 20-year history of the Mudcats, with Sappelt joining Gaby Sanchez (2008), Jason Kendall (1995) and Mark Johnson (1994).

Sappelt, the Cincinnati Reds' 9th-round selection in 2008 from Coastal Carolina, started this season at High-A Lynchburg, hitting .282 prior to his first Double-A call-up on April 30th. From there, Sappelt was nearly unstoppable. Sappelt delivered a pinch-hit, infield single in his first at-bat and proceeded to boast the highest batting average in Carolina Mudcats history. When the regular season concludes on Labor Day Monday, Sappelt's .361 clip will have obliterated his nearest competition - Tennessee's Brandon Guyer hitting .339. Sappelt's mark is 31 points higher than the next-best average in Mudcats lore, set in 1995 when Emil Brown hit .330 for the Mudcats' championship squad. Sappelt had 38 multi-hit games, including a pair of four-hit contests.

The Southern League batting title will wear a Mudcats uniform for the first time since outfielder Chris Aguila collected his final hit of the season on the campaign's last day in Orlando to pace the league at .320. Other batting titlists for the Mudcats were Juan Pierre (.326, 2000) and Trey Beamon (.323, 1994).

Sappelt was promoted to Triple-A Louisville on August 12th, where he has hit .302 in 20 games with the Bats entering Thursday's action.

All told, Sappelt has hit a collective .337 with nine home runs, 71 RBI and 24 stolen bases, leading all Reds minor leaguers in hitting while ranking 5th in RBI and 5th in steals.
