Cowgill Named Team MVP to Headline BayBears Award Winners

MOBILE, Ala. - Prior to their regular season home finale on Thursday night at Hank Aaron Stadium, the Mobile BayBears presented a handful of players with year-end awards including outfielder Collin Cowgill, who was named BayBears MVP.
Cowgill, the only BayBear to be named to the Southern League Postseason All-Star squad, has cracked a team-leading 16 home runs to go with 83 runs batted in this season. He's also paced the club with 34 doubles, 87 runs scored and 21 outfield assists.
Additionally on Thursday, catcher Konrad Schmidt was honored as the team's Offensive Player of the Year. Schmidt has hit a team-leading .314 with 10 homer and 61 RBI. His .484 slugging perecentage and .854 OPS are also the highest on the ballclub.
Outfielder Evan Frey was named the BayBears' top defensive player. Frey has played mostly center field while committing just five errors in 125 games. He's also picked up nine outfield assists which is second on the BayBears behind Cowgill.
Left-handed pitcher Tom Layne was awarded as the BayBears Pitcher of the Year. Layne has made 25 starts for the BayBears this season and has picked up a dozen wins. He's just the second BayBear pitcher in history to win at least 12 games in a year. Layne also leads the league with three complete games.
The BayBears also debuted two new awards this season. Pitcher Kyler Newby was the recipient of the BayBears Community Service Award which has been named after longtime BayBears batboy Wade Vadakin. Team Chaplain Lorin Barr presented outfielder Ollie Linton with the club's Chapel Award. Linton had perfect attendance this season in Sunday's chapel services.
Jacksonville and Montgomery both lost on Wednesday which kept the BayBears a game behind the Suns for first place in the South Division with their wild card lead over the Biscuits at two games with just six to play.
The BayBears will take on the Lookouts in their regular season home finale on Thursday night at 7:05.
