Carolina Mudcats News Release
Jacksonville, FL --- Zack Cozart homered while Zach Stewart whiffed eight over seven strong innings as Carolina downed Jacksonville 2-1 at the Baseball Grounds on Saturday night.
The series' second game was delayed initially by rain for nearly two hours before starting, with the Mudcats (31-25) taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Stewart. Cozart's homer led off the third inning against Willie Glen (L, 1-5) to advance the lead to 2-0. Cozart's homer was his third in four games.
Stewart (W, 3-0) won his third straight decision since moving to Double-A. Stewart walked three and permitted just two hits over six innings. Stewart allowed his first Double-A run in the fifth on a double by Lorenzo Scott, but Jacksonville manager Brandon Hyde elected to send Glen home to try to tie the game, but Glen was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning. Stewart fanned Andy Jenkins to snuff out the Suns' (27-30) threat.
Carolina, which saw its eight-game winning streak halted by Jacksonville on Friday night, remained two games behind first-place Huntsville, which defeated West Tenn 7-5 on Saturday night.
Travis Wood (4-3, 1.38) starts Sunday's swing game at 3:05 PM ET against Graham Taylor (2-4, 4.02) at the Baseball Grounds.
