Mobile, AL -- Todd Moser allowed one run over six innings to register his first Double-A win as first-place Carolina clobbered the Mobile BayBears 10-1 on Sunday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Moser (W, 1-1, 6IP, 6H, 1ER, 2W, 6K) was staked to a 5-0 lead before he made his first pitch. Matt Padgett (2-5, 2R, 3B, RBI) tripled in Chris Aguila (2-5, 2R, 2B) , then scored on an error by first baseman Jon Knott. Later in the inning, Chip Ambres (HR, 6, 1-3, 2R, HR, 3RBI, W) connected for a three-run homer against starting pitcher Steve Watkins (L, 1-3).
In the third, Ryan Jorgensen (2-4, 2RBI) singled in two runs to increase the lead to 7-0. Carolina added three in the fourth against Watkins on a bad-hop single by Wilson Valdez (1-4, R, RBI), a double from Miguel Cabrera (1-5, 2B, RBI) and a grounder Drew Niles.
Moser fanned six over his 100-pitch start.
Steve Kent (ND, 2IP, 1H, 0ER, 2W, 1K) worked two scoreless innings for the second straight game, then yielded to Ryan Baker (ND, 1IP, 1H, 0ER, 1K), who fanned one over a one-hit ninth inning.
Carolina gained ground on each of its three closest competitors in the East, moved two games up on Tennessee, seven on Greenville and eight full over Jacksonville.
Randy Messenger (1-3, 7.18) starts Monday night against Mobile's Brad Baker (0-3, 6.93).
Notes: Carolina improved to 5-5 on its longest road trip of the season with two games remaining in Mobile Monday and Tuesday.... C Ryan Jorgensen was relieved behind the plate by Chris Ashby starting the last of the eighth inning. Jorgensen, who started his 12th straight game, caught 102 consecutive innings due to an ankle injury to back-up Brandon Harper suffered on April 27. Harper is expected back later in the week.
