Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
WILMINGTON, DE â Carlos Duran's RBI triple in the top of the eighth broke a 3-3 tie and gave the Myrtle Beach Pelicans a 4-3 victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks, Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium. J.D. Alleva collected a career-best 4-for-4 day at the plate for the Rocks.
Myrtle Beach (12-22) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning behind a sacrifice fly from Duran and a two-run single from Tony Pena. Blue Rocks starter Chris Tierney allowed the three runs in five and two-third innings. He surrendered eight hits, walking four and fanning four.
The Blue Rocks (21-14) narrowed the Pelican lead to 3-2 in the bottom half of the second. It started as Justin Cowan led off with a single and advanced to second on the first of Alleva's four hits on the day. Tony Arnerich followed with a double to left field, scoring Cowan. Brett Groves grounded out as Alleva scored.
The Rocks tied the score at 3-3 in the fifth as Trey Dyson smacked a two-out single into right field and was thrown out at second, attempting to stretch the single into a double. Darren Fenster scored the run for Wilmington on the play. Myrtle Beach starter Zack Miner went five innings in the no-decision, allowing three runs on eight hits.
Marcel Vianna (2-1) was the winner for the Pelicans, pitching a perfect seventh inning. Alec Zumwalt (1) earned his first save the 2003 season, pitching the final two innings. Eduardo Villacis (1-2) allowed the game-winning run, but allowed just two hits in his two and one-third innings pitched. Mike Natale finished out the game for Wilmington, fanning two Pelicans in the ninth inning.
Following the game, left-handed relief pitcher Brad Stiles was promoted to Wichita (AA-Texas).
BLUE ROCKS NOTES: The Blue Rocks hit the road for a seven-game road trip, which includes a four-game series at Kinston and a three-game stop at Myrtle Beach. On Monday, the Rocks open their series at Kinston as Brian Bass (1-1) takes to the hill and opposes Nick Moran (4-0). The Rocks have committed multiple errors in three straight games and are 11-10 when making a blunder. Wilmington is now 5-6 in one-run games and had three of the four games this weekend decided by that margin. The Rocks and Pelicans split the weekend series with the Rocks leading the season series, 4-3.
