Carolina Mudcats News Release
Huntsville, AL --- Gaby Hernandez allowed two hits over eight solid innings while Dante Brinkley hit a lead-changing two-run home run as Carolina knocked off first-place Huntsville for the third straight night 3-1 at Joe Davis Stadium on Wednesday night.
Hernandez (W, 9-9) outdueled 11-game winner Lindsay Gulin (L, 11-5) as the Mudcats (29-29) surged to within four games of the Northern Division lead with 12 games remaining. Hernandez permitted a double to the first batter of the game, then held Huntsville hitless until an eighth-inning double to Steve Sollmann. Brandon Villafuerte (S, 2) recorded a three flyout ninth inning to notch his second save of the series.
Gulin, a 30-year-old southpaw who has amassed over 1,300 innings on the mound in a career that started in 1995, took a 1-0 lead into the third when Hernandez blooped in a single to right field, his fourth hit of the season. Brinkley then swatted Gulin's next pitch inside the left field foul pole for his 11th home run, his fifth in his last 10 games.
The Mudcats tacked on an insurance run when Eric Riggs stretched a double to a triple, then scored on a two-out wild pitch from Gulin as he walked Lee Mitchell.
The Stars (33-25) had only two hits for the second straight game. Carolina won for the sixth straight time on the road, matching the second-longest streak in club history.
Blake McGinley (6-7, 3.69) starts on Thursday night against Steve Hammond (7-8, 4.64) at 8:05 PM ET at Joe Davis Stadium.
