Mobile BayBears News Release

MOBILE, AL - The BayBears evened their 2007 record to 64-64 Wednesday, with a 3-1 win over the Tennessee Smokies. Max Scherzer (3-4) was the second straight BayBears starter to come away with a win, allowing one run in 5.2 innings. Scherzer struck out six Smokies and walked just one. Clint Goocher pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, and Reid Mahon picked up his first Double-A save.

The BayBears scored once in the first inning, on an RBI groundout by Javier Brito, and added a second run on an error made by Robinson Chirinos, the Tennessee shortstop. Chirinos was playing shortstop after Gary Cates, along with manager Pat Listach, was ejected in the third inning. The BayBears third run provided insurance when Wilkin Castillo had an RBI single to right field.

The BayBears have now won two straight, and remain in third place, eight games behind first place Jacksonville and Montgomery, who are in a tie atop the Southern Division with 12 games remaining in the Southern League season.

The BayBears and Smokies play again Thursday at 7:05 PM, with Osbek Castillo (1-3) starting for the BayBears against Tennessee RHP Justin Berg (6-7).
