Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, NC --- Jose Castro delivered a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth to send Carolina to its fourth straight win, defeating Mississippi 6-5 at Five County Stadium before 5,006 fans on Thursday night.
Carolina (25-41) had coughed up a pair of two-run leads during the night before Castro looped a pitch just over the head of second baseman Travis Jones to score Jason Bour from second base.
Mississippi (33-31) had scored two in the eighth to tie the game 3-3, and another pair of runs in the ninth to catch Carolina again 5-5.
Matt Maloney, who was optioned to Double-A by the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday, worked seven innings of three-hit ball in receiving a no-decision. Maloney allowed a first inning homer to Brandon Hicks, but checked the Braves offense on two hits the rest of his tenure.
Ramon Geronimo (W, 3-3) earned the victory by throwing just one pitch. Geronimo entered the game tied in the ninth, recording a double play grounder to end the frame.
Sean Henry hit a two-run homer in the first to give Carolina a 2-1 lead, then Zack Cozart's triple in the sixth scored Henry for a 3-1 advantage.
Bour collected three of the Mudcats' 10 hits in the game, while Castro's game-winner was part of a 2-5 evening.
Luis Montano (0-6, 6.11) starts Friday night against Mississippi's Kyle Cofield (10-5, 3.78) at 7:15 PM ET.
