MOBILE, Ala. - A big night for BayBears catcher Matt Tupman who throttled three hits including his first home run in 16 months as he helped the BayBears to a 5-4 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits on Thursday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Tupman's first knock of the contest lifted the lid off a third-inning rally as he singled in front of a base hit by Chris Rahl to start the frame against Aneury Rodriguez (9-11). After Evan Frey bunted Tupman and Rahl over a base, Mark Hallberg dribbled a single through the middle which brought both men home, giving the BayBears (65-71, 28-38) their first lead of the ballgame.
Montgomery (62-73, 29-36) did strike first in the top of the third against Cody Evans who was celebrating his 26th birthday in a spot start. Evans walked Pedro Powell with one out in the third which turned into a double after Powell stole second. Chris Nowak's two-out hit drove Powell to the dish for the game's first run.
Evans only lasted three before handing off to Roque Mercedes (1-0) who worked through a couple errors and a walk in the fifth during his two scoreless frames. Josh Ellis also turned in two scoreless while fanning four.
In the sixth, the BayBears put the boots to Rodriguez who uncorked a lead-off single to Ricardo Sosa to commence the inning. Sosa advanced to second on an error by first baseman Matt Fields and moved to third when Orlando Mercado bounced into a fielder's choice. As Jason Bowers tried to turn a double play on Mercado, he lost his grip on the baseball, allowing Sosa to score.
Tupman followed that up with a two-run blast to right-center which gave Tupman his first round-tripper since he played for Omaha on May 6 of last season. Tupman also knocked a single in the eighth to round off a 3-for-4 night.
Daniel Stange returned to the hill for the first time since August 17 but struggled as he coughed up three runs (two earned) on three hits. Reid Mahon (S, 2) helped Stange through the eighth by fanning Fernando Cortez with the tying run on third before tossing a perfect ninth.
The Mobile BayBears have sent 100 players to the major leagues. They'll continue their final homestand on Friday night at 7:05 with Tom Layne (0-3, 5.04) getting the start. For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
