Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, NC --- John Jaso delivered a two-out, two-run single in the sixth to lift Southern Division-leading Montgomery past Carolina 3-2 before 4,985 fans at Five County Stadium on Thursday night.
Leading 2-0 in the sixth, Jesus Delgado (L, 5-7) yielded an infield single, a line single to left, followed by Evan Longoria being hit by a pitch to fill the bases. After a groundout to first base scored Montgomery's first run, Jaso hit Delgado's 2-2 pitch under his glove into centerfield to give the Biscuits (20-8) a 3-2 lead. Nick DeBarr and Dale Thayer combined for the final three scoreless innings as the Mudcats (13-15) dropped their second to Montgomery in the three games in the series. Thayer's 18th save was his first this season working two innings. He had not appeared in a game since July 14th.
Blake McGinley worked five shutout innings in his second start of the season, scattering five hits and fanning three, departing as Carolina's pitcher of record, but receiving a no-decision after Delgado was touched for three in the sixth.
Christopher Mason (W, 12-4), who entered the game with the #1 ERA in the league, notched his circuit-leading 12th win, working six innings, striking out a season-high eight batters. Brett Hayes doubled in two runs in the Carolina fourth inning, sailing a two-out flyball over a pursuing centerfielder Fernando Perez.
Rex Rundgren went had two of Carolina's seven hits, while Jai Miller registered his third consecutive two-hit game.
Jimmy Serrano (3-1, 2.91) starts the series' fourth game against Montgomery's Derek Feldkamp (2-6, 6.06) at 7:15 PM ET at Five County, followed by another studded Friday Night Fireworks display courtesy of the Carolina Ford Dealers.
