Suns Pitch Past Mississippi

July 19, 2007 - Southern League (SL1)
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

Pearl, Miss. - Starter Justin Orenduff pitched six solid innings while relievers Cory Wade and Ramon Troncoso held off late rallies, leading the Jacksonville Suns (61-37, 20-8) to their second straight win over the Mississippi Braves (53-45, 11-17) with a final score of 2-1 in front of 3,820 Thursday at Trustmark Park.

The win kept the Suns in a tie for first place in the second half with the Montgomery Biscuits in the Southern League South Division pennant race.

Both offenses struggled early as Mississippi starter Matt Harrison and Jacksonville starter Justin Orenduff dueled. The Suns had a leadoff single from Cory Dunlap in the second inning, but the next three men went down in order. In the third inning Jimmy Rohan's leadoff double was followed by back-to-back strikeouts. Juan Gonzalez walked with two out, but a pop-out ended the threat. A.J. Ellis and David Nicholson recorded back-to-back two-out singled in the fourth inning, but a force out ended another threat.

On the other side, Orenduff allowed three Mississippi hits in the first five innings. A first inning leadoff double was wasted as the next three hitters went down in order. J.C. Holt and Carl Loadenthal recorded back-to-back two out singles in the third inning, but Mark Jurich popped out to end the threat.

The Suns finally jumped on the scoreboard first during the fifth inning. Harrison started strong in the fifth with strikeouts of Justin Orenduff and Xavier Paul, but followed them with a walk of Juan Gonzalez. James Tomlin next doubled over third base to score Gonzalez and open a 1-0 lead. Cory Dunlap next singled to right field to plate Tomlin and open a 2-0 advantage.

Mississippi answered during the sixth inning off of Orenduff. J.C. Holt led off with a triple and Carl Loadenthal next singled him home, cutting the Jacksonville lead to 2-1.

The Braves had chances to score in the final innings against the Suns bullpen, but were unable to come through. Cory Wade entered the game for the Suns in the seventh inning, and rebounded from a leadoff error with a strikeout and back-to-back force outs to end the threat. Wade allowed two straight hits with one out, but induced a pop out and groundout to end another chance for the Braves.

With the promotion of the Southern League leader in saves (19) in Jon Meloan, the closing duties fell upon Ramon Troncoso, who allowed a one out single and walk before striking out Josh Burrus and inducing a force out at second base off the bat of J.C. Holt to end the game.

Orenduff (6-3) picked up the win for the Suns after six innings with one run on five hits, no walks and six strikeouts. Harrison (5-6) fell in the loss for the Braves, with two runs on seven hits, two walks and eight strikeouts in six innings. Troncoso (3) saved the game for the Suns.

The Suns and Braves meet in game four of the series Friday at 8:05 p.m. ET. Suns LH Mike Megrew will face Braves LH Kelvin Villa. Fans can follow the action in Jacksonville on AM 930 The Fox or online at jaxsuns.com.
