
Carolina Ends Six Game Skid with 1-0 Victory

ZEBULON - Stiven Cruz started and struck out eight over six scores innings, Jeison Pena pitched through three perfect innings in relief and Eduardo Garcia went 3-for-3 with the only run of the game as the Carolina Mudcats snapped a six-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory versus the Delmarva Shorebirds on Wednesday afternoon at Five County Stadium.
The Mudcats (7-10, 41-42) broke what was a scoreless tie in the eighth with a run from Garcia while taking their 1-0 lead on reliever Miguel Padilla and the Shorebirds (6-11, 27-55). Garcia was hit by a pitch to start the eighth and would end up at third moments later after stealing second and moving to third on an error. Jesus Chirinos then brought Garcia in with a sacrifice fly while giving Carolina their 1-0 lead.
Pena (1-0) went on to retire the side in order in the ninth with three straight groundouts. He also retired the side in order in the seventh and eighth and finished the game with nine straight outs while earning his first win with the Mudcats.
Cruz started and turned in an absolute gem as he pitched through six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts, one walk and just four hits allowed. His eight strikeouts matched a season-high and fell one short of a career-best. The six-inning scoreless effort was also his second in his last three starts.
Deivy Cruz started for the Shorebirds and pitched through five scoreless with five strikeouts and four hits allowed. Padilla (0-1) ended up with the loss despite going through three innings with one unearned run allowed, no hits and two strikeouts.
The victory snapped Carolina's six-game losing streak. It was also their first since getting a series opening victory over the Cannon Ballers on July 4 in Kannapolis. The series will continue Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. with game three of the six-game series.
