Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
ZEBULON, N.C. - The Delmarva Shorebirds bats couldn't capitalize on the few chances they were presented in a 1-0 loss to the Carolina Mudcats on Wednesday afternoon at Five County Stadium.
The loss ends the Shorebirds (27-55, 6-11) four-game winning streak while the Mudcats (41-42, 7-10) managed to snap their six-game losing streak.
The Shorebirds had their best chance to score in the very first inning. After Elio Prado walked, Frederick Bencosme doubled him to third, putting two in scoring position. The Shorebirds couldn't capitalize, stranding both runners aboard. The Shorebirds wouldn't put a runner on third base the rest of the game.
Deivy Cruz started for the Shorebirds and held the Mudcats in check, keeping the ballgame scoreless through the first five innings. Cruz went five shutout frames, allowing four this and three walks while striking out four but didn't factor into the decision.
The Mudcats finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the eighth. Eduardo Garcia was hit by a pitch to start the frame and then stole second before taking third when the throw was sailed into center. Jesus Chirinos then scored Garcia with a sacrifice fly to left, providing the Mudcats pitching staff with the only run they'd need.
Jeison Pena (1-0) earned the win for the Mudcats, going three perfect innings down the stretch, striking out three.
Miguel Padilla (0-1) suffered the loss out of the bullpen for the Shorebirds, firing three no-hit innings, but allowing an unearned run while striking out two without issuing a walk.
The Shorebirds continue their six-game series with the Carolina Mudcats on Thursday, July 14 at Five County Stadium. The Shorebirds hand the ball to Edgar Portes (0-3, 4.15) while the Mudcats counter with Edwin Jimenez (2-4, 4.52). First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
