Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

After allowing a deciding three-run eighth inning last night, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans dropped their second consecutive game as the Fayetteville Woodpeckers scored three in the top of the seventh to win 3-1. The Birds dropped to a 55-28 record and 8-9 in the second half, while the Woodpeckers improved to 37-44 overall and 6-10 in the second half.

Myrtle Beach's only offense came from Kevin Made (2-4, HR, 2B, RBI) on a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. Juan Mora (1-4, 3B) tripled in the bottom of the ninth to center field. The Pelicans collected five hits for the game while leaving seven runners on and going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

It was a great three-inning start from Luke Little who tied his career-high with six strikeouts and did not allow a hit, run, or walk. Jose Miguel Gonzalez (6-2) took the loss in relief with all three earned runs off four hits in the top of the seventh. The Pelicans took a combined no-hitter to the top of the seventh before allowing the three runs.

The long ball was again the key for Fayetteville with home runs from Cody Orr (1-2, HR, RBI) and Jaxon Hallmark (1-3, HR, RBI) in the seventh. Leosdany Molina (1-3, RBI, BB) also brought in the go-ahead run on a single in the seventh.

Miguel Ullola (1-0) earned the win with five innings out of the bullpen with the home run allowed and six strikeouts to three hits and a walk. Valente Bellozo opened the game with four scoreless innings and a pair of hits allowed.

Both pitching staffs kept the game scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. Made led off the inning with a solo home run down the left field line that landed out of the stadium. It was Made's second home run of the week and ninth this season.

Without a hit through six innings, Fayetteville overcame the deficit with a three-run seventh. Orr led off the frame with a home run to left field on a 1-1 count from Gonzalez. Tyler Whitaker followed with a single, stole second base, and advanced to third on a Gonzalez wild pitch. Molina brought him home with a single that was deflected by Made at short and dribbled into left field as the Woodpeckers went up 2-1. With two outs in the inning, Hallmark put the finishing touches on with a solo home run down the line to make it 3-1.

The Pelicans made it interesting in the ninth as Mora flew a ball to center field that hit off the wall for a one-out triple. With the tying run at the plate, Jacob Wetzel and Matt Warkentin both struck out to end the game.

The Pelicans will try for their first win this week on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Woodpeckers.
