
Carolina Comeback Falls Short in Loss to Lynchburg

Zebulon, N.C. - The Lynchburg Hillcats scored four runs over the final two innings, and held on to best the Carolina Mudcats 9-8 on Saturday night at Five County Stadium. The offense was on display, as the two teams combined to shatter records, and total 28 base hits.
The Hillcats improved to 18-15 with their second straight win. The Mudcats (13-22) dropped their fifth straight at home.
Matt Chaffee (2-2) picked up the win a scoreless inning-and-a-third. Owen Dew (2-4) surrendered four runs on eight hits over two innings in the loss. John Cornely got Lynchburg out of a ninth inning jam to notch his first save.
Trailing 9-5 entering the last of the ninth, Carolina loaded the bases against the Hillcats' closer, Nate Hyatt. Francisco Lindor pushed his on-base streak to 19 with a walk to start. Jerrud Sabourin followed with a single, and a base on balls to Jordan Smith loaded up the bags.
Charlie Valerio drilled a sac-fly to deep center that scored Lindor. A wild pitch from Hyatt brought home Sabouring for a 9-7 deficit. After a walk to Luigi Rodriguez and a pitching change, Joe Sever single to right. Smith scored on the play. A groundout by Zack MacPhee pushed the tying run to third and the go-ahead run to second, but Cornely struck out Aaron Siliga to end the game.
The Mudcats jumped out to a 5-1 lead after three innings, but the Hillcats reeled off eight in a row. Lynchburg tied the game at five with a four-run fourth. A two-run homer from Will Skinner highlighted the frame.
The Atlanta Braves' Advanced-A affiliated scored two to claim the lead in the eighth. Elmer Reyes drove in the go-ahead run, and scored two hits later for a 7-5 advantage. Lynchburg added two more in the ninth off five hits, including three doubles.
In all, the Hillcats cracked seven doubles to break the Mudcats' current franchise record for two-baggers allowed. Sabourin drew four base on balls, tying Carlos Moncrief for the most in a game by a Mudcat. The Mudcats' nine walks were also a new current franchise record.
