THE HILLCATS: Beat the Carolina Mudcats 10-3 snapping a three-game losing streak last night...The 'Cats hit four home runs last night, two from 1B William Beckwith...SS Elmer Reyes and RF Will Skinner added long balls as well...Beckwith's first home run came in the first inning, and the Hillcats led the entire way...RHP A.J. Holland earned his third win of the season giving up three runs, one earned in 5.2 innings...The Hillcats are now 17-15, one game out of first place...
VS. CAROLINA: The Hillcats are 1-0 against the Carolina Mudcats this season...The Mudcats are the last team the Hillcats needed to face to complete their circuit of the Carolina League...Carolina currently owns the league-worst record at 13-21...Last year, the Mudcats took the season series 11-9...They won six of the first eight meetings with Lynchburg...
BECK BECK BECK GONE!: 1B William Beckwith hit two home runs last night...His first snapped a drought of 51 at-bats without a dinger...Prior to the dry spell, Beckwith was averaging a homer every 11.8 at-bats (59AB/5HR)...The first inning blast was his first since April 23, and it took him all of three more at-bats to get another one...With seven home runs on the season, he is tied for third-most in the league...In addition to the blasts, he also drew his 19th walk last night, which is tied for third-most in the circuit...He has drawn 10 walks in nine May games, currently batting .254 with and on-base percentage of .377 this season...Also currently on a five-game hitting streak (6-for-20)...
HELP IN THE HOMER DEPARTMENT: OF Will Skinner and SS Elmer Reyes homered last night as well, giving the Hillcats four total blasts on the night...That number doubled their monthly total in May to eight...They had four others in the first eight games of May...For Skinner, it was his second of the month, and fourth of the season...He's now hitting .333 (7-for-21) in May with seven RBI, after hitting just .104 in April...Reyes hit his first home run of the season...It was his first since May 27, 2012 with Low-A Rome...He hit five last season, but none from June on...
ODD STREAK CONTINUES: By snapping their three-game losing streak last night, the Hillcats kept another streak going...They still are yet to lose a series opener, immediately after losing the finale of the previous series...So, their losing streaks, which have been few and short-lived have never extended past one series...They've been swept twice, as the Salem Red Sox beat them three times April 18-21, and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans beat them three times this past Tuesday through Thursday, but they came back and won the openers of the following series both times...
RECORD POWER: Four home runs last night was the most by the Hillcats in a single game this season...They previously had three on April 7 in Potomac...The four homers were also a new record for the Advanced-A Carolina Mudcats...Since the team switched from Double-A to Advanced-A in 2012, four home runs in the most the team has given up in one game...Four was the most home runs in a game by the Hillcats last year as well...They did it July 29 in Salem...
HYATT ANOTHER LEVEL: RHP Nate Hyatt threw another scoreless inning Wednesday night, continuing his scoreless streak to 12.1 consecutive innings...He has only allowed one earned run all season, and that came in his first appearance April 6 at Potomac...Since then he has turned in 10 straight scoreless outing, with a pair of two-inning appearances...Has 18 strikeouts in 13 innings this season and just three walks...All three of those walks came in the same appearance, two scoreless innings in Winston-Salem...Currently ranks fourth in batting average against (.156) for Carolina League relievers, fourth for strikeout per nine ratio (12.46), and third in fewest baserunners per nine (8.31)...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: LHP Elvis Araujo signed with the Indians as an international free-agent July 16, 2007, one day after turning 16 out of Maracaibo, Venezuela...Made his debut in 2008 with the Dominican Summer League...Went 4-2 with a 1.89 ERA, but then missed 2009-2010 due to injury (left elbow)...Once healthy, the Indians moved him to the States...Spent most of 2011 with the Arizona League Indians (9-1, 2.86), but also made two starts for Short-season Mahoning Valley (6.2ip, 11h, 6er, 7bb)...He led the AZL in wins and was third in ERA, third in strikeouts (58, third in WHIP (1.14)...Was named an AZL post-season All-Star...Last year, went to Low-A Lake County (7-10, 5.00)...Made 28 starts, tied for most in the Midwest League...Pitched 135 innings, more than doubling his career total...Tied foru fourth in strikeouts with 111...Tonight will be just his second Advanced-A start, called up from Extended Spring Training in May...
