Mobile, AL -- Miguel Cabrera and Matt Padgett homered to lead Carolina to a 7-1 win over the Mobile BayBears in the series opener at Hank Aaron Stadium Saturday night.

Cabrera (2-4, 2R, HR, RBI, SB), who went 2-4, struck a Johnny Hunter pitch in the third inning to grow a 5-0 lead. The Mudcats (23-12) scored four times in the first to hand Marty McLeary a lead before he delivered his first pitch as a Mudcat.

Chris Aguila (1-4, R, 2B, RBI) reached on a hustle double to begin the game, took third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. Padgett (1-5, HR, RBI) delivered with his fifth homer of the season, an opposite-field liner. Cabrera then walked, stole second and scored on a two-out double by Josh Wilson. Chip Ambres (2-4, R) followed with a slow hopper to third for an infield hit as Wilson (2-5, R, RBI) scored from second.

McLeary (ND, 3.2IP, 2H, 0R, 5W, 2K) made 65 pitches in his Carolina debut. Mobile (14-20) was held hitless into the fourth inning when Danny Bravo singled. McLeary walked five, but received two double plays during his stint.

Aaron Small (W, 1-0, 3.1IP, 2H, 1ER, 3W, 3K) earned the win in relief also in his Mudcats debut Small, a 15-game winner in his major league career, allowed just a solo homer to Todd Donovan in the seventh.

Cabrera's homer, his seventh, came against Hunter in the third..

Carolina added two runs in the seventh inning against reliever Alan Webb. Chris Aguila drove in the first on a bases loaded grounder bobbled by third baseman Bravo, then Wilson Valdez (0-3, RBI, SB) lifted a sacrifice fly to score the second.

With the victory, the Mudcats reached the midway point of the first half maintaining a one-game lead in the East over Tennessee.

Todd Moser (0-1, 3.60) starts the second game of the series Sunday night at 8:05 PM ET against Steve Watkins (1-2, 4.50).

Notes: Carolina is now 4-5 on its longest road trip of the season, which wraps up after Tuesday's finale in Mobile... Small will move into the rotation for the Mudcats and make his next scheduled appearance Thursday in the homestand opener against the Birmingham Barons... Following Friday's game, the Marlins sent LHP Chris Key back to Jupiter. Key appeared in one game in Orlando, throwing two scoreless innings... Carolina turned four double plays in Saturday night's game, two grounders, one liner and one pop fly.
