Frederick Keys News Release
The Frederick Keys (14-19) got their first victory over the Lynchburg Hillcats (20-11) this season, notching a 9-5 victory before 687 fans on Saturday, May 10 at Lynchburg City Stadium. The win snaps the Keys two-game losing streak and five-game losing streak to the Hillcats this season.
The game was delayed for 31 minutes by fog in the top of the 9th inning with the Keys holding a 6-5 lead and a runner on first base with no outs. Once play resumed, second baseman Omar Rogers smacked a RBI base hit to push the lead to 7-5 and center fielder Woody Cliffords followed with a two-run home run, his fifth of the season, to finish the scoring at 9-5.
The Keys got on the scoreboard first, scoring three runs in the 1st inning on a RBI base hit by first baseman Mike Huggins, a RBI double by right fielder Cory Keylor, and a RBI base hit by third baseman Tripper Johnson. Lynchburg scored their first runs in the 5th inning, plating two on a RBI double by right fielder Jeremy Harts and a run scoring base hit by Nate McLouth to cut the lead to one. The Keys pushed the lead back to two on a RBI double by Huggins in the 6th inning.
The Hillcats took a brief lead by scoring two runs in the bottom of the 6th inning, but the Keys answered right back with two runs in the 7th. Hillcats catcher Ryan Doumit threw the ball into center field trying to throw out shortstop Gary Cates attempting to steal second. The error scored catcher Ryan Hubele from third, and the Keys later scored another run in the inning when a passed ball allowed Cates to score.
The Keys bullpen shut down the Hillcats the rest of the way. Right-handed reliever Sendy Rleal came on in the 8th inning, sitting the Hillcats down in order. Rleal came back in the bottom of the 9th and, unfazed by the fog delay, notched a 1-2-3 inning to get the save, his 6th of the season. Left-hander Anthony Boughner (2-1) pitched 0.2 innings to pick up the victory in relief. Hillcats reliever Jeff Miller (0-1) received the loss.
Sunday's final game of the four-game series against the Hillcats will start at 2:05 p.m. Starting for the Keys is left-handed pitcher Rommie Lewis (1-2, 2.78) while the Hillcats will send right-handed pitcher Ian Oquendo (2-2, 4.73) to the mound. Following Sunday's game, the Keys will travel to Salem, VA for a four-game series with the Salem Avalanche starting on Monday, May 12.
