New Mexico Thunderbirds News Release

ALBUQUERQUE, NM, Jan. 11, 2010 - Carlos Powell of the Albuquerque Thunderbirds was today named NBA Development League Performer of the Week for games played during the week of Jan. 4. Powell twice earned the award during the 2007-08 season.

Powell led Albuquerque to a 4-0 record, including two victories at the 2010 NBA D-League Showcase (over the Rio Grande Valley Vipers and Tulsa 66ers) and home wins over the Reno Bighorns and Utah Flash.

"No one is more deserving than Carlos," said head coach John Coffino. "He's been our leader through this winning stretch and has shown why he was deserving of being the number one overall pick in this year's draft. We hope the NBA scouts take note of how valuable he is to a team. He's given us everything he has and more, and his attitude has been exemplary."

Powell averaged 20.0 points, shooting 43 percent (28-of-65) from the field, to go with 5.8 assists and 3.3 rebounds. The 6-7 forward out of South Carolina scored more than 20 points on three occasions, including a 25-point outing against the 66ers on Jan. 7.

Powell and the T-Birds are riding a five game winning streak, and will take the road for three games this week. Coffino will be hosting the fourth Coach's Show of the 2009-2010 season tonight, Jan. 11, from 7 pm - 8 pm at Spectators Sports Bar and Grill. The show will air live on 610 The Sports Animal, and fans are encouraged to come out and show their support.

You can bring your group out to a Thunderbirds game for as low as $4 per person. Call 505.265.3865 or visit www.abqtbirds.com for more information.
