Rochester Honkers News Release
ROCHESTER, MNN - A sophomore at Davidson College, Michael Carico has had a 2022 season to remember. He hit .406, led the country in on-base percentage, finished fourth in slugging, and led the Wildcats in their offensive front.
After a fantastic season, Carico has been recognized as one of the best catchers in college baseball. On June 22nd, Carico and two former Honkers, Robert Moore and Alex Baeza, were awarded the Rawling's Gold Glove award. Carico was also named as one of the three finalists for the Buster Posey award, which is presented to the best catcher in NCAA I baseball.
From June 30 to July 4th Carico will be participating in the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp. The USA Baseball roster features 50 of the country's best non-draft eligible college baseball players, with thirty-one different schools being represented. During the week of June 30 to July 4, players will split into two teams and compete in a five-game series in Cary, Durham, and Charlotte, North Carolina.
On July 5th, Team USA will announce the final Collegiate National Team 26-man roster. If Carico is listed in the final roster, he will then travel to Haarlem, Netherlands to compete in the international baseball tournament, Honkbalweek Haarlem.
The Honkbalweek Haarlem tournament is held at Pim Mulier Stadium in Haarlem, where the Netherlands, Italy, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Cuba, and the USA will compete for the 2022 title. This will be Team USA's first appearance since 2014. Team USA will begin the tournament with a game against Japan on July 9th followed by Italy, Cuba, the Netherlands, and Curaçao. The tournament will conclude with the championship on July 15th.
The Honkbalweek Haarlem will be an amazing opportunity for Carico to represent the USA on a global stage with fellow elite players.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to participate in the USA training camp. It is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I'm just going to try to make the most of it, live in the moment, and soak it all in. If I do that, everything else will take of itself."
Michael Carico will return to Rochester at some point in July to continue his spectacular summer season with the Honkers. The Rochester Honkers Baseball wishes Michael Carico all the best as he continues to push through the arduous climb to the top.
