Mallards Impress in First Game of Second Half

Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, WI - The Mallards looked strong in all facets of the game in the first contest of the second half in a 3-0 shutout win over the Green Bay Rockers at Warner Park in Madison.
After finishing the first half with an even 18-18 record, the Ducks were determined to play better baseball to begin the second half. That became true when the Ducks looked dominant in just their second shutout win of the season against the Rockers. In just his second start, Mitchell Leroy (6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 7 K) earned his second victory of the campaign. Leroy brought a no-hitter into the 6th inning before catcher Jake Berg singled to right field. A combination of fastball and slider was able to get Leroy ahead in counts early against the Rockers lineup in the fifth matchup of the season between the two clubs. Leroy's previous season high in innings was four and for strikeouts was three, he surpassed both of those totals today in his six scoreless frames. The Mallards played just their second errorless game since the first week of the season on Wednesday night.
The first of Madison's three runs came in the bottom of the 2nd against Rockers' starter Dylan Carter (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K) on a wild-pitch, scoring Marcus Brodil (2-3, R) after a Nick Gonzalez two-out double. The duo from the University of South Florida combined for four of the Ducks' nine hits on the night. Catcher Josh Caron was the third Mallard with a multi-hit performance. The final two runs for Madison came on sacrifice flies. One from Scott Shaw in the bottom of the 5th and another from Estevan Moreno in the 8th. The three runs were enough behind the strong start from Leroy and shutout stuff from Steven Lacey and Bryce Woody (S, 5) to begin the second half with an unblemished record of 1-0.
The Mallards wrap up the two-game home series with Green Bay tomorrow at Warner Park. University of Connecticut freshman Tommy Ellisen earns his first collegiate start for the Mallards on the mound. Coverage can be found on the Northwoods League website under the 'Live Action' tab at 6:20 PM.
