Traverse City Pit Spitters News Release
Kalamazoo, MI - The Traverse City Pit Spitters jumped on top of the Kalamazoo Growlers early and never looked back on their way to a 9-5 victory Wednesday night.
The first three batters of the game walked to load the bases. On a 2-0 count, Colin Summerhill crushed a fastball over the left field wall for a grand slam, his second home run of the season. 19 pitches into the game, the Pit Spitters held a 4-0 lead.
After Kalamazoo cut the lead to 4-2 on a two-run homer, Traverse City got one back in the second. Jakob Marsee doubled home Trey Truitt III to go up 5-2.
Derek Clark completed his fifth game of 6+ innings pitched. The three-time Northwoods League Pitcher of the Night struck out a season-low three batters. But he allowed just four hits and three runs to improve to 3-0 on the season with a 2.63 ERA and a Northwoods League best 0.80 WHIP.
The Pit Spitters took a 7-2 lead after a Summerhill RBI groundout in the fifth and a Truitt RBI bunt in the sixth. But Kalamazoo would make things interesting late.
Later in the sixth, the Growlers pushed one across. In the bottom of the seventh, Kalamazoo loaded the bases with two outs. A walk and hit by pitch would bring in two runs and put the tying run in scoring position. But Mitch White would enter and get a groundout to end the inning. White pitched 1.2 shutout innings, retiring every batter he faced.
Two more Pit Spitters came across in the ninth. Christian Beal scored on a wild pitch before Summerhill singled home the ninth run of the game. Anthony Ramirez shut the door in the ninth to secure the win.
