Cards Win Second Straight
April 26, 2007 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals needed some late heroics, but took their second straight game over the Wichita Wranglers on Thursday night, winning by a score of 6-2 at Hammons Field.
Cards' catcher Bryan Anderson's second homer of the year was a big one, a two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh inning that put the Cards in front to stay. With Joe Mather doubling to open the inning against Wichita reliever Dusty Hughes (0-2), Anderson erased a 2-1 deficit by launching a ball over the right-center field wall, giving Springfield a 3-2 lead. The Cards added another run in the inning, when Juan Richardson drew a bases-loaded walk to force home Mike McCoy, making it a two-run game at 4-2.
Kevin Ool (1-0) made that lead stand, going the rest of the way without allowing a base-runner. Ool (1-0) earned the win by tossing a total of 2 1/3 innings of perfect relief.
Joe Mather put the Cards on the board in the fourth, crushing his first of two homers on the night over the center field wall for his league-leading eighth homer of the year, putting Springfield in front 1-0. Mather, who later homered in the eighth inning, now has three multi-homer games in 2007.
That 1-0 lead held until the seventh, as Cards' starter Mitchell Boggs battled some early control problems, but settled down to work six scoreless frames. The right-hander allowed just five hits, but walked three and hit a batter in the no-decision.
Wichita did their only damage of the game against new Cards' reliever Michael Cooper. With two outs in the seventh, Craig Brazell and Jorge Padilla had back-to-back, run-scoring hits, giving the Wranglers a 2-1 lead.
Leading by two, Springfield got their final runs in the bottom of the eighth. After Mather homered to lead off the inning, Mike McCoy capped the frame with a run-scoring single to left field, giving Springfield a 6-2 lead.
Wichita starter Danny Christensen went four innings, allowing just one run on two hits in the no-decision.
The Redbirds (7-9) are now just one game out, behind the first-place Tulsa Drillers, who come to Hammons Field on Friday night to open a four-game series. Springfield will send Cory Rauschenberger (0-2) to the mound on Friday night, against Tulsa's Greg Reynolds (1-0). Friday is another AM Pyrotechnics Friday Night Fireworks Extravaganza, as everyone will enjoy a fireworks display after the game. Gates open at 6:10pm and game time is 7:10pm. Tickets are available for all four remaining games in the home stand by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com. Go Cards and Get Your RED On!
