Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals' pitching staff turned in their second consecutive strong outing, holding on to beat the Arkansas Travelers on Monday evening at Hammons Field by a score of 4-1.
Cory Rauschenberger, Josh Dew, Fernando Salas and Luke Gregerson combined to hold Arkansas to just one run on six hits, as the Cards won their second straight game, remaining in a first-place tie in the Texas League's North Division.
Rauschenberger (1-2) got his first win of the year, going five innings, while allowing just one run on four hits. The bullpen, which worked 5 1/3 scoreless innings on Sunday, pitched in with four scoreless frames on Monday, including a scoreless ninth from Luke Gregerson, who recorded his fifth save in as many chances.
Nate Sutton's two-out RBI double chased home Cliff Remole in the second, as Arkansas took the early lead.
The Cards got the equalizer in the fourth, as Jose Martinez picked up a sac fly to bring home Allen Craig, tying the game at 1-1.
Springfield took the lead in the fifth, as Shane Robinson's RBI double brought home Mark Shorey for a 2-1 lead. Jon Jay's RBI groundout scored Tyler Greene from third, as Springfield went up 3-1.
Brandon Yarbrough tripled with one out in the sixth, then scored on Luke Gorsett's RBI single, rounding out the scoring at 4-1 against Travs' starter Dan Denham (1-4).
Cards' reliever Josh Dew got in a bases-loaded one-out jam in the seventh, but got some help from Fernando Salas. Salas came in and fanned Coby Smith for the second out, then got Hainley Statia to ground out to keep the lead at 4-1.
Salas would work a perfect eighth before turning it over to Gregerson, who allowed two base-runners, but worked a scoreless ninth for the save.
Springfield (15-16) sits in a first place tie with Northwest Arkansas after their second straight win. The Cardinals will send Adam Daniels (0-1) to the mound against Arkansas right-hander Fernando Rodriguez (1-3). Game time for Tuesday's home stand finale will be 12:10pm.
