Springfield Cardinals News Release
Randy Leek (4-2) pitched seven innings, earning his second straight victory as the Springfield Cardinals picked up a win on the road over the Midland RockHounds, winning on Monday night by a final score of 6-2. The Cardinals improve to 20-24 with the win, while the first place RockHounds fall to 28-16.
Leek carried a shutout into the seventh inning before Midland got anything going offensively. He allowed an infield single to Andre Ethier, then a two-run homer to Brant Colamarino, making it 6-2. Leek would retire the final three men he faced, going seven total innings, adding to his league-leading total of 65.2 innings pitched.
Cards reliever Anthony Ferrari would work the final two innings in relief, holding on to the four-run advantage.
The Cards took the early lead in the second inning against Midland starter Steven Bondurant. Travis Hanson led off the inning with a triple off the right field wall. One out later, Papo Bolivar's double down the right field line made it 1-0. Bolivar would steal third and eventually score on Juan Diaz' two-out single, giving the Cards a 2-0 lead.
Springfield added three in the third, as Bondurant (3-3) walked the bases loaded with just one out. Robinson Cancel's sac fly to right plated Shaun Boyd for a 3-0 lead. With runners at second and third and two outs, Bolivar delivered a two-out, two-run single, making it 5-0.
In the fifth, Bondurant issued his fifth and final walk of the night, issuing the walk to Robinson Cancel with one out. Reliever Kyle Crowell came out of the Midland bullpen and struck out Papo Bolivar for the second out of the inning. But with Cancel at third base, Aaron Herr collected a two-out, run-scoring single, making it 6-0.
The Cards look to make it two straight, sending Stuart Pomeranz to the mound for his Double-A debut on Tuesday night. The RockHounds will counter with Steven Obenchain. Pomeranz was 2-5 for the Palm Beach Cardinals and was just recently called up to replace the roster spot opened when Josh Kinney was promoted to Triple-A Memphis. Game time from Midland on Tuesday night is 6:30. The Cardinals return home to Hammons Field on Monday, May 30th to take on the Midland RockHounds.
