Cards split with Yanks

Brett Gardner hit two home runs and drove in three runs as the Staten Island Yankees (New York Yankees) defeated the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) 11-2 Sunday night at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey. The loss dropped the Cardinals to 29-31, while the Yankees improved to 40-19. Hairo Solis (4-1) earned the win by striking out the only batter he faced to help the Yankees salvage a spilt of the two-game series with the Cards. Starter Zack Zuercher took the loss to fall to 4-6.

Staten Island struck first with four runs in the top of the second. Kyle Larsen was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and went to second when Mark Carroll singled with one out. Jordan Devoir followed with a single to load the bases, before Tony Roths RBI ground out brought home the first run. Jose Perez laced a ground rule double to right for the second run and Zuercher walked the next batter Gardner to load the bases. Kyle Anson then lined a two-run single to center to give the Yanks a 4-0 lead.

Gardners first home run came leading off the fifth, before he launched a two-run shot as part of a six-run Yankees sixth, as Staten Island sent eleven men to the plate in the inning. With one out, Devoir walked and Roth doubled to put runners on second and third. Perez then ripped a two-run single, before Gardners blast to deep right field. After Anson walked, reliever Dan Stevens walked Eduardo Nunez and gave up a two-run single to Larsen. Matt Carroll capped the inning with a RBI double to right.

The Cardinals first run came when Brandon Yarbrough doubled home Chad Gabriel in the bottom of the fourth. They finished the scoring in the bottom of the seventh on Donovan Solanos RBI double to right field.

The Cardinals have Monday and Tuesday off this week as part of the New York-Penn League All-Star break, before returning to action on Wednesday, August 24 to start a five-game road trip in Aberdeen. New Jersey will battle the Ironbirds (Baltimore Orioles) in a two game set, and then finish the swing with a three game series in Hudson Valley with the Renegades (Tampa Bay Devil Rays).
