Arkansas Travelers News Release
The Arkansas Travelers were held to just four hits at Dickey-Stephens Park during a 4-0 loss to the Springfield Cardinals on Tuesday night at Dickey-Stephens Park. Trevor Reckling (1-2) threw a great game while taking a hard-luck loss going six innings and giving up only one run on a solo homerun from Xavier Scruggs (1) before he turned the ball over to the bullpen. Alexi Amarista delivered a pair of singles leading the Travs offensively, but the Travs just couldn't get much going against Cards lefty Nick Additon (6-6) and three Cardinals relievers in their third shutout loss of the past seven games.
After the loss in the series opener to Springfield the Travs record falls to 12-19 (38-63 overall), and the Cardinals improve to 15-15 (53-47 overall).
Reckling was dominating during his six innings racking up ten strikeouts and allowing just three base hits. The only run he allowed was on Scruggs' second-inning home run. Additon also dealt six innings, but allowed zero runs on four hits and five strikeouts.
The Cardinals got the first run on the board in the top of the second on a solo homerun from Scruggs. Reckling got a quick strikeout from Andrew Brown, but then Scruggs hit the first pitch he saw over the right field fence to put them ahead 1-0.
The only time a man reached third for the Travs was in the third inning when Carlos Colmenares led off with a walk. Tyson Auer moved Colmenares to second on a sacrifice bunt, and then Alexi Amarista hit a two-out single to put runners at the corners. Charlton Jimerson came up with a runner in scoring position, but struck out to end the inning.
The score remained 1-0 until the Cardinals added another run in the top of the eighth inning. Jose Garcia led off with a single against Jeremy Haynes, and was followed with a double off the left field fence from Daryl Jones that slipped out of Nick Gorneault's glove as he crashed into the wall, putting runners on second and third. Tony Cruz then popped up to Travs catcher Jose Jiminez for the first out, but Matt Carpenter singled to bring in Garcia increasing their lead to 2-0. Jeremy Berg then entered the game and got Steven Hill and Andrew Brown to strikeout to end the inning.
The Cardinals added two more runs to seal the deal in the top of the ninth inning. Scruggs led off with a single, and then was moved to second on an errant pickoff attempt by Berg. Jose Garcia hit a two out double down the left field line that scored Scruggs to make the lead 3-0. Jones followed Garcia with back-to-back doubles scoring Garcia and making the final score of 4-0.
The Travs return to the field on Wednesday against the Springfield Cardinals for game number two. The action will start at 7:10, and the gates open at 6.
