Cardinals Shut out Travelers 4-0

Little Rock, AR - After being postponed in NW Arkansas for the series finale, Springfield began a short three game set with the Arkansas Travelers at Dickey Stephens Park.

After a scoreless first inning, the Cardinals jumped out in front in the top of the second. With one out, Xavier Scruggs, making his Double-A debut, jumped on the first pitch from Trevor Reckling and launched an opposite field home run to right to give Springfield a 1-0 edge.

Cardinals' starter Nick Additon was able to work his was out of trouble in the 3rd inning as he allowed a lead off walk and a sacrifice bunt before striking out Andrew Romine. With two outs, Alexi Amarista singled on the infield to put runners on the corners, but Additon struck out former big-leaguer Charlton Jimerson to end the Travelers threat.

With the Cardinals still ahead 1-0, rain began to fall and the umpires decided to delay the game. After a quick 16 minute delay, the Cardinals got a two out base runner on a Matt Carpenter walk who then stole second base. Steven Hill then came up, but was called out on strikes to end the inning, the 10th strike out for Reckling in 6 innings.

Nick Additon would be equally was good as he went six strong inning not allowing a run on just four hits. He would begin the 7th, but after issuing a walk, Additon was relieved by Tom Eager who got a caught stealing, a strikeout and a ground out to end the 7th inning.

In the 8th, the Cardinals would pad their lead as Jose Garcia single and Daryl Jones doubled to start the inning. After a pop out, Matt Carpenter lined a single to right to score Jones to add a run to the Springfield total, 2-0.

Springfield added two more to their tally in the 9th as Xavier Scruggs singled to start the inning and moved to second on an errant pick off attempt. With two outs and Scruggs still at second, Jose Garcia doubled down the left line to score Scruggs and Daryl Jones followed with an RBI double to center to score Garcia to give the Cardinals a 4-0 advantage.

The Cardinals bullpen was outstanding in relief of Additon with Tom Eager, Blake King and Scott McGregor throwing three scoreless innings while not allowing a hit. In fact, the Travelers did not have a hit after the 3rd inning in Tuesday night's 4-0 Cardinals win.

Springfield will continue their three game series with the Arkansas Travelers in Little Rock, Arkansas at Dickey Stephens Park at 7:10pm Wednesday night. The Cardinals will send right hander Brian Broderick (3-2) to the mound against left hander Andrew Taylor (0-2) for the Travelers.

The Cardinals will return home on Friday, July 30th for a seven-game homestand against the NW Arkansas Naturals and Arkansas Travelers.
