New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) pitcher Zack Zuercher has been named the NY-Penn League Pitcher of the Week for games played from August 1-6.
Zuercher, 9th round draft pick out of the University of Rhode Island, won both games he started during the week, posting a 1.42 ERA in 12.2 innings. He struck out 12, while surrendering just 9 hits and 2 walks.
He began the week with 7 shutout innings against the Tri-City Valley Cats (Houston Astros) on 8/1 and followed on Saturday by tying a career-high with 8 strikeouts in 5.2 innings against the Jamestown Jammers (Florida Marlins).
It was Zuerchers first NY-Penn League Pitcher of the Week award. For the season, Zuercher is 4-4 with a 3.80 ERA. He has thrown 47.1 innings and struck out 41, second on the Cardinals staff.
