BURLINGTON, VT --- Rhyne Hughes and Garrett Groce hit back-to-back home runs as the Hudson Valley scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning for a 4-2 victory over the Vermont Expos in New York-Penn League baseball Tuesday night at Centennial Field.
Expos starter Gene Yost did not allow a hit over the first 5.1 innings until giving up a one-out double to Robbie Bouman in the sixth inning. Bouman scored one-out later when he scored from third base on an infield RBI single from Eric Durante to give Hudson Valley a 1-0 lead.
Hughes followed with his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot to rightcenter field and Groce lined his seventh home run down the leftfield line to give Hudson Valley the 4-0 lead.
While Yost was shutting down the Renegades, Hudson Valley starter Wade Davis was just as dominating of Expos batters. Davis allowed four hits and walked two over the first six innings, but induced Vermont to hit into three double plays. The Expos had the bases loaded with one out in the second inning after back-to-back leadoff walks and a one-out error, but Davis got Rolando Arnedo to hit into a 6-3 double play to end the threat.
Vermont finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh inning on a leadoff home run from Dee Brown off Davis. It was Brown's eighth home run of the season and sixth homer at Centennial Field. The Expos other run came in the ninth on a one-out solo homer from Leonard Davis, his sixth home run of the year.
Davis (5-1) allowed one run on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts over seven innings for the win, while Derek Feldkemp pitched the ninth inning for his 11th save of the year. Yost (4-2) allowed four runs on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts over seven innings for the loss.
Durante was 2-for-3 with one run, one double and one RBI for Hudson Valley (23-23), whie Brown and Davis both had two hits for Vermont (17-31). Drew McMillan was 1-for-4 in his final game with the Expos as his rehab assignment at Vermont ends and he returns to Double-A Harrisburg.
The Expos, which lost two of three in the series to Hudson Valley, head out on the road for a six-game roadtrip. Vermont will play three games at Batavia and three at Tri-City before returning home to begin a six-game homestand on Tuesday, August 16th with ESPN's Sportscenter broadcasting from Centennial Field as part of their "50 States in 50 Days" promotion.
