Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals and AT&T have partnered together for the 2006 season, adding more excitement to the Springfield Cardinals and Hammons Field experience.

A big part of the partnership is the addition of the AT&T Speed Pitch sign in right field, one of the biggest fan requests of the off-season. If you've been to Hammons Field already in 2006, you've been able to track the speeds of each pitch.

AT&T will also sponsor a newly added promotional night on Monday, May 8th, as 1500 fans will receive a Free AT&T Springfield Cardinals Pint Glass.

AT&T and the Cardinals have also teamed up to bring you the brand new Video Gallery on the Cardinals website, the pitching changes during all Springfield Cardinals radio broadcasts, and soon, a brand new Kiosk will be added to the concourse of Hammons Field, where fans will be able to surf the internet thanks to AT&T.

Wranglers Hold Off Cards on Tuesday Night

The Wichita Wranglers got a late scare, but held off the Springfield Cardinals on Tuesday night, winning by a final score of 7-5 at Hammons Field. The Wranglers jumped out to a 6-0 advantage, then withstood a bases loaded jam in the ninth inning.

Cards starter Chris Lambert (1-1) struggled, lasting just 2.2 innings, a season-low for any Cardinals starter.

Lambert gave up a run in the first, as Kila Kaaihue's RBI single, the third straight two-out hit, scored Alex Gordon for a 1-0 lead.

In the third, Lambert walked three men to load the bases with one out. Kaaihue then picked up his second straight hit, knocking in Angel Sanchez. On the play, right fielder Nick Stavinoha bobbled the ball, allowing another man to score, making it 3-0. Mitch Maier followed with his first of three hits, a three-run homer to right field, making it 6-0.

The Cards got on the board in the third, as Iker Franco led off with a double. After moving to third on a fly ball, Franco scored on Reid Gorecki's RBI groundout, making it 6-1.

In the fourth, the Cardinals finally put some pressure on Wichita starter Ryan Snare (2-0). Rico Washington and Brian Martin picked up consecutive doubles to open the inning, making it 6-2. With two men on base, Iker Franco connected with a clutch two-out, three-run homer, his third of the year, making it 6-5.

That's as close as the Cards would get however, as the offense couldn't touch the Wichita bullpen, which threw four innings of scoreless relief. Springfield loaded the bases in the ninth inning, but Wranglers reliever Leo Nunez struck out Reid Gorecki on three pitches, earning his first save of the year.

The Cards bullpen was also very effective on Tuesday night, allowing just one run in 6.1 innings. A major factor in keeping the Cards within striking distance, was a franchise record five double plays turned in by the Cardinals' defense.

Offensively, Both Reid Gorecki and Nick Stavinoha extended their respective hitting streaks to nine straight games. Ty Parker and Franco both had two hits to lead Springfield.

The Cardinals are now 7-5 and fall out of first place, one game back of Tulsa in the North Division. Stuart Pomeranz will look to turn things around for the Cards on Wednesday night, as he takes on Wichita right-hander Kyle Middleton. Game time from Hammons Field will be 7:10pm. Tickets are available for all seven remaining games in the home stand by calling (417) 863-2143 and at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
