Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
(MIDLAND, Texas) - The Hooks rallied from an early three-run deficit to defeat Midland Wednesday night 5-4 at Citibank Ballpark. The back-to-back wins over the RockHounds give the Hooks a 7-6 first-half record and set up the fifth and deciding game of the series Thursday night.
Trailing 3-0 in the fourth, first baseman John Fagan brought the Hooks off the canvas with a two-run triple to the gap in right center. Corpus Christi drew even in the sixth on an RBI single to right off the bat of Jorge Cortes, following a double by J.R. House and a Fagan single.
The tie didn't last long, as Midland right fielder Jed Morris opened the home sixth with a home run to right center, his first of the year. That set the stage for another Hooks' rally in the seventh.
Reliever Shawn Kohn (1-1) retired the first two Hooks' batters in the seventh, and got House behind in the count 0-2. But House fought off pitches gamely, and eventually worked a nine-pitch walk. That brought Bonifay to the plate, and he slugged an 0-1 pitch onto the berm in right center for his third homer of the year and a 5-4 Hooks' lead.
Bonifay led all Hooks' hitters with three knocks. House, with his sixth-inning double, has now hit safely in all 13 games played by Corpus Christi, tying him with Josh Anderson for the longest hitting streak in Hooks' history. Shortstop Ben Zobrist added two hits and a sacrifice bunt, and for a second straight night turned in a superb night in the field.
Paul Estrada (2-2) picked up the win. He coughed up the blast by Morris, but afterward retired nine in a row, striking out three. Aaron Williams made his first appearance for the Hooks since returning from Triple-A Round Rock, working a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save.
RHP Chance Douglass (1-1, 7.00) gets the call for Corpus Christi in Thursday's rubber game. He'll be opposed by RHP Brad Ziegler (2-0, 1.38).
